Charlie arrived at POS on 9-1-11. He had been left in a rusted out cage outside with dog food in his bowl. His water bowl was sitting in the middle of the food bowl with green algea throughout the water. Charlie was seen by Dr. Villareal on 9-2-11. He has self mutilated wounds on his legs and side areas. Charlie also has calcium deposits in his right eye. He will be on a diet of pellet, seed, birdie bread and fresh foods until he stabilizes enough to do blood work. His initial vet visit has been paid by POS but he will need continued vet care and a full blood panel work up. Any donations toward Charlie’s care are greatly appreciated. You can donate through Paypal, USPS to the PO Box or by calling Dr. Villareal’s office and paying into the Charloie fund.
Charlie 10 days after arriving at POS. Charlie is gaining weight and eating like a piglet. He is getting stronger by the day!
Update 10/5/11
Charlie unforunately continues to mutilate internittently. We found his left leg and foot swollen yesterday. He went to see Dr. Villareal today and received another Multi-Vit. injection, an injection of Baytril and had has blood work drawn. He also had his nails done. Today’s visit exhausted the Charlie fund. When the lab work comes back Dr. Villareal will decide how to proceed. He feels Charlie may have a Staph or Strep skin infection from mutilating his skin. Depending on labs he may have to start antibiotics by mouth and chlorahexadine baths. He is slowly gaining weight. Charlie is now in his cage enjoying his Recovery Bread that his Aunt Cilene made for him. Needless to say he is exhausted.

Charlie’s white blood cell count was elevated, along with his neutrophil count. He has been started on Bactrim twice daily for 14 days for the infectionand Metcam once a day for the swelling to his legs and the discomfort from new feather growth. He needless to say hates his meds but rolls on his back and opens his beak to to take it. We don’t even have to twoel him.

Charlie has finished his antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine. He continues to grow feathers on his chest and legs. He continues to slowly gain weight as well. He is in the general population now and seems to very much enjoy being with the other birds.
